Kaku Kahuna Review
At Tally Yakkers we have put many hours together on the deck of this fantastic kayak paddleboard hybrid platform. Whether working skinny water bays, back country, rivers, or lakes – the kaku has proven to provide truly the best crossover platform we have been on. Expecting the short length to not track as well as its larger kayak counterparts, the first paddle impressions proved quite the opposite. These Kahuna’s track like an arrow and paddle effortlessly. Whether choosing to stand up, take a seat in a Larry Chair, or just sit on your favorite cooler- the Kahuna has proven ease of paddle in all weather conditions and waters.
We have overloaded the Kaku as well beyond capacity by a bit and the basic result was it ran a little lower in the waterline, but managed to provide a great day on the water in calm conditions – this was a test only and we definitely do not recommend this. In heavy wind and chop, it paddled with ease head to head with a Native Slayer 14.5. This is not to compare them head to head as overall platforms (calm down Native fans 🙂 ), but it did show the same paddle effort across each platform in less than stellar conditions. This was yet another surprise we had during our first impression runs with the Kaku Kahuna.
First impressions aside, these have become our favorite platforms overall for the past year. Easy to load and transport, easy to launch, and a great fishing platform. Whether spin or fly fishing, these open decks offer a great way to fish with ease for both standing to sightfish as well as access to gear. These have also proved to be a favorite on our Nature and Eco Tours here in North Florida. Great for beginners and an awesome addition to any experienced kayakers arsenal.
What makes it a crossover?
The greatest part of the Kahuna is its position as a true kayak paddleboard cross over. This is due to the great hull design which tracks perfect and slices through water with ease. This hull design was created from studying the best kayak hull designs and purposefully designing those great aspects to connect to the paddleboard portion of the kayak – the wide stable platform and the open flat top deck.
Is the Kaku Kahuna good for fishing?
Yes! Simple answer. If you read the information above you can see what makes this a great overall platform as well as a great fishing platform. For fishing specifically, the deck mat and low slap hull make it excel as a skinny water stalking platform where noise, control, and tracking are of the most importance.
